and blending facilities in large quantities. While there
have been some successful tests, to date no pipeline will
allow shipments of biodiesel. Railroads are a weak alternative
as the cost differential is prohibitive. Rail can’t
compete with the four cents it costs to move a gallon of
diesel fuel from Houston to New York via pipe. And
unlike ethanol, there is no federal mandate creating a
requirement for biodiesel that supersedes pipeline economics.
Now, who owns all those pipelines and terminals?
Well in many cases it’s the oil companies...
